Real Traffic Tuesday #2 – Page 1 Lock Out!

The bar has been raised for getting your site listed in Google over the last few months, making it more difficult for you to get website traffic. Maybe you’re still happy with getting your website onto page 1 of Google for a particular search term. If you are, good luck to you!

However, I can tell you right now that your competitors are aiming to Lock Out the entire first page of the Big G, and if they decide to target one of your keyphrases you’d better watch out. A growing number of internet marketers have realized that you can get more than one listing on the front page, but there’s a hardcore group of link builders who are taking multiple listings a heck of a lot further. And you should be following suit.

These guys are looking to occupy 6 or 7 of the top 10 natural search results in Google. And if you have any sense, you will be doing the same. Why? Think about it. If you are already getting traffic from one listing, imagine how much more traffic you could get – from the same keyphrase, by the way – if the searcher has little choice but to click one of your listings ‘cos they’re all over the page. Google Lock Out!

Think about it this way… most people busy themselves with building content and backlinks to their main salespage or homepage. And with some, or a lot of effort, your site makes it onto page 1. Well done. You may even bag an indented listing, giving you two separate page 1 listings.

But you’ve probably at some point done a bit of article marketing and seen your, or someone else’s EzineArticle link on page 1 for your keyphrase. Surely you realize that your article listing is just as valuable as your site listing, so why not build backlinks to it so that is stays on page 1?

Google’s Universal Search means that videos are popping up on page 1 as well these days. That could be your video and another way for people to find your site. YouTube is good for this, but make sure you submit your video to MetaCafe as well.

Squidoo is another popular, and free, website whose pages often show up on page 1 of Google. Rather than just building a lens to create a backlink to your website, like most people do, you should be building backlinks to your lens as well. Get it ranking and you have another listing in the bag.

We’re up to 5 potential page 1 listing already. Half way to a page 1 Lock Out and a load more traffic from the same keyphrase. If you want to take this further still, just study page 1 listings for a range of keywords and take note of the Web 2.0 or free submission sites that are getting high ranking listings. You can use those sites yourself to grab some page 1 real estate of your own.

If this sounds like a lot of work to you, it is. But if you don’t do it, sooner or later, someone else will and it will be you who is locked out of page 1!

Real Traffic Tuesday #1 – RSS Feeds

Welcome to the very first Real Traffic Tuesday! I’ve decided to devote at least one post each Tuesday to discussing web traffic generation methods, because regardless of the kind of website you have, the niche you’re involved in or the goals you want to achieve with your site – you need visitors. Targeted visitors to be specific, and the more the better!

Unfortunately, it’s the one part of running a successful website that many people stumble over. Traffic is everything. Without it you can’t make sales, test conversions, split test copy, grow a list of subscribers, build a community or make any money.

So let’s start with something simple – RSS feeds.

If you’ve got a blog (or even if you don’t) then you probably have an RSS feed of the posts on your blog. A feed is an XML file that contains some details about your site, the titles of your posts, full or partial text of each post and the date and time each was posted. Think of it as a text-only version of your site. The edited highlights.

You can see what an RSS feed looks like by clicking the RSS icon (the orange square) in the top-right corner of this page, where it says “Subscribe to RSS feed“. You’ll see that you are presented with options that let you subscribe to the feed using a Feed Aggregator like Bloglines or Google Reader, for example. Also note the address of the feed – http://www.therealmarkwilson.com/feed/ – and go and find yours because you will need it later.

By subscribing, your readers can have your posts, or excerpts of your posts delivered to them as soon as you make a new one. So instead of visiting their 10 favorite sites each day to see what’s new, they can simply check their Aggregator, read the summary and if they want to read more, click through to your site.

It’s important therefore, to make sure that 1. your headlines are attention grabbing AND include the keyphrase you want to get traffic for, and 2. that your first couple of sentences leave readers wanting to read more, so that they will click through to your site.

add-feed-linkThe next step is to submit YOUR feed to some Feed Directories. You can find tons of them by searching Google for ‘RSS feed directory‘ or simply ‘feed directory‘. Feedagg.com is a good one to start with and ranks well in Google. Find the Add Feed link and paste in your feed address (Remember I told you to make a note of it?). If you are asked to include Tags, enter your keywords here. Make sure you read how to format them and don’t assume that spaces and commas will be recognized.

Set yourself a target of submitting your feed to 5 or 10 new feed directories a day. Keep a simple spreadsheet of the directories you’ve submitted to so you don’t make duplicate submissions. Once you have this list, RSS feed submission is a task you can easily and cheaply outsource for your next website.

How to keep making money in a recession

The recession continues to bite hard for many people, despite politicians’ best efforts to assure us that the worst is over and that there are signs of recovery. Like most people, I take statements like that with just a little pinch of salt. It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Especially if you are an Internet Marketer.

There are still plenty of opportunities out there to make money online, but you may have to thinks differently to find them. People change their buying habits when they encounter financial difficulties and during recessionary times. They don’t stop buying. They just change what they buy, and how they make decisions about what to buy. If you can understand and adapt to that, you can buck the trend and make more money online.

Many restaurants, for example, are struggling at the moment, but a number of grocery chains have made huge profits as people forfeit eating out in favour of cooking at home. If something in your home breaks down, you might now look for a repair manual or a repair service instead of simply buying a replacement.

Adaptation is a unique and incredibly powerful benefit of pursuing an income through Internet Marketing. The vast majority of marketers are either one-person operations working from home, or they operate as small companies with just a few staff. And because we usually don’t have money tied up in infrastructure, this makes it possible for us to be promoting luxury car accessories today, and a guide to avoiding car repossession tomorrow.

That level of flexibility allows us to change direction any time we want to. We can ensure that we are marketing products or services that are currently in demand, not something that was selling like gangbusters at the height of the economic boom.

In a lot of cases, the exact same hot buttons that cause people to buy, remain unchanged by the economic climate. There are still plenty of desperate buyers out there to be found, you just need to think about what kind of things you would buy, even if you didn’t really have the money to. If you had a dodgy knee that gave you daily pain and needed to be stabilised, you would buy a knee support – no question. Pain is a great motivator. So is fear – just take a look in Google Insights for Search at the trend graph for Flu Masks!

Of course, it isn’t just negative emotions that drive people to buy. But it does make you think, doesn’t it?

No blog? Surely not!

Not having a personal blog these days is almost a crime. It’s like not having bank account. You can get by without one, but why would you want to?  How I’ve managed without one for so long, I don’t know. So it’s time to rectify the situation with the launch of TheRealMarkWilson.com

Yes, there are other Mark Wilsons out there … apparently … but they’re all impostors. I’m the REAL one!

I expect to post a lot here about various Internet marketing topics. I have several websites in development that I will tell you more about closer to their launch. I am likely to talk about my passion for music and motor racing. And I will probably vent and rant from time to time, and generally express myself in a way that I wouldn’t to your face (‘cos, I’m a nice guy really).

So welcome to my new blog. I hope you enjoy it.
